Morphing Banks into
Financial Services Conglomerates:
New Opportunities in
The Emerging Global Scenario.

Welcome
Dear Delegates
Bankers Conference (BANCON), is an annual event that witnesses confluence of experts from banking and finance to deliberate upon issues of imminent importance to industry. BANCON, therefore, is considered a special event with far-reaching implications for the future of banking.
This year’s conference-BANCON-08 is special for many other reasons as well. One, it is for the first time that a State-owned private sector bank is hosting the conference. Two, the conference is being organized at a place which is aptly known as the “Paradise on Earth”. Three, the theme of this year’s Bancon has a special significance as it aims to foresee the future of banking post 2009.
I have great pleasure in inviting you to the 30th edition of India’s most prestigious Bankers’ Conference, BANCON 2008, hosted by J&K Bank with organizational support from Indian Banks’ Association IBA.
The commodification of finance and its productisation is transforming banks into financial service providers beyond the blurring of distinction between commercial banking and investment banking consequent upon liberalization and deregulation of financial sector.
This transformation has to be seen in a global context, which is making it imperative for Indian banks to think in terms of size and structure. Consequently Mergers and acquisitions are bound to happen and bring in its wake a serious consolidation in the banking space over the next few years.
Given the strengths of Indian banks and banking sector, the regulatory framework, prudential norms, and technological sophistication; this is a window of opportunity in the emerging global scenario. Can Indian banks morph into financial services firms and replicate the success and spread of information technology? If so, how? How does it all fit into the futuristic framework of the Indian banking industry?
Bancon 2008 would provide an ideal platform to initiate some of the insightful discussions on these and other related issues, identifying both prospects and the bottlenecks for Indian banking industry in the emerging global financial markets.
I hope to have your complete cooperation in making BANCON 2008 one of the memorable and landmark conventions in the history of Indian Banking Industry.
I hope you will find the conference an enriching personal experience also.

Looking forward to meet you.

Warm regards
Sincerely yours

(Haseeb A. Drabu)
